Steps to Take for Filing Your Work Injury Claim

  • Report Your Injury: Notify your employer immediately about your work-related injury or illness. Timely reporting is critical to ensure your claim is not delayed or denied.
  • Seek Medical Attention: Visit an OWCP-authorized medical provider for an evaluation and treatment. Ensure your physician documents the injury thoroughly and uses appropriate language to connect it to your workplace activities.
  • File Your Claim: Complete and submit the appropriate claim form with OWCP. Depending on the injury, this could be a CA-1 (Traumatic Injury) or CA-2 (Occupational Disease) form.
  • Gather Supporting Evidence: Collect all necessary documents, such as medical reports, witness statements, and relevant workplace reports. This evidence strengthens your claim and demonstrates the validity of your case.
  • Follow Up Regularly: Stay proactive by checking on the status of your claim and responding promptly to any requests for additional documentation or clarification.
  • Address Challenges: If your claim is delayed, denied, or requires further action, we are here to help. We’ll assist you with filing appeals, requesting reconsideration, and ensuring authorization for necessary treatments and benefits.

Through each step, our mission is to help you feel supported and empowered, ensuring you receive the benefits you rightly deserve.

Common Challenges When Filing a Claim

Filing a claim with OWCP can sometimes be a complex process, and employees may encounter various challenges along the way. Here are some common issues individuals face:

  • Incomplete or Incorrect Documentation: Missing or improperly filled-out forms, insufficient medical evidence, or lack of supporting documents can delay or jeopardize a claim.
  • Lack of Timely Reporting: Waiting too long to report an injury or illness can result in complications or denial of the claim. It's important to act quickly.
  • Claim Denials: OWCP may deny claims if they determine there is insufficient evidence to prove the injury or illness is work-related, requiring appeals or additional proof.
  • Communication Barriers: Misunderstandings or lack of clear communication between the employee, employer, or OWCP can lead to confusion and delays.
  • Authorization Delays: Gaining approval for necessary treatments or procedures can sometimes take longer than expected, impacting recovery timelines.
  • Navigating Reconsiderations and Appeals: The process of addressing denials or unfavorable decisions can feel overwhelming for employees unfamiliar with the system.

While these challenges can feel discouraging, know that support is available. Understanding these obstacles can help you prepare and take proactive steps to address them effectively.

Our mission is simple: to help you recover—physically and financially. You don’t have to handle the complexities of the OWCP system alone. With our team of experienced case managers, therapists, and medical professionals, we’re here to support you every step of the way.
